Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom, was known for being very levelheaded. But, one time a mortal named Aranche challenged Athena to a weaving contest, because she thought she was better than Athena. That didn’t bother Athena, and she accepted the challenged gladly. She even judged it fairly. But, the one thing that made Athena mad was that Aranche weaved a picture of Athena’s father, Zeus, cheating on his wife, Hera. Athena that forced Aranche to hang herself. Soon after Athena felt bad for Aranche, so she brought her back to life as a spider so she can weave beautiful webs.
Athena’s birth is an interesting one. Athena’s father, Zeus, is the king of the gods. Athena’s mother is Metis, but not much is known of Metis. Metis didn’t like Zeus, but her kept pursuing her until she gave up. While Metis was not paying attention Zeus swallowed her whole. Later on, Zeus got a horrible headache. The gods gathered to help him, and they cracked open his skull, and out came Athena, in a full suit of amour.
Poseidon and Athena were competing to win the favor of the people of Athens so they would name the city after them. Poseidon was one of the “Big 3” gods, also Athena’s uncle. Athena and Poseidon agreed to each give one gift to the city, and the people will choose which patron they wanted. Poseidon gave the city a saltwater spring. They liked it since it supplied trade, but it was too salty to drink. Athena gave the city the first olive tree, which gave them wood, fuel, and food. The people than choose Athena as their patron and named the city Athens after her.
This is a summarized story of what Athena did to Medusa. Medusa was a Greek girl who constantly boasted of her beauty. One day Medusa went with her friends to the Parthenon, a building dedicated to Athena. Medusa would constantly make comments about how she was more beautiful than Athena. Athena, being the goddess of beauty was offended. Everyone left the Parthenon except Medusa, who was admiring her reflecting. Her reflection changed into Athena and Athena cursed Medusa. Medusa became hideous, her gorgeous hair turning into snakes, her body in a reptile-like body. And worse, she turned her face so ugly that if someone looked at her they turned to stone.
Athena, Hermes and Artemis went after Meropis, Vyssa, Agron and Eumelous because they would not worship them. Hermes is the god of trade and Artemis is the god of the hunt. Meropis, Vyssa, Agron and Eumelous are just normal people. The gods then disguised themselves as maids and a shepherd. Hermes, the shepherd, asked Meropis, Vyssa, Agron and Eumelous if they would lead them through Athena and Artemis’ sacred forest for a banquet for Hermes. When they refused the gods turned into their natural form and changed them all into different types of birds.
Once a man named Tiresias walked in on Athena bathing. This is normally punishable by death, but Athena, being the understanding god she is, only blinded him. Tiresias’s mother begged Athena to undo the curse, but Athena couldn’t. So she did the next best thing and gave him the gift of prophecy
Owls tend to be a popular symbol of Athena and wisdom. That is mainly because a species of owls would always be sitting on the roof of the Arcopolis of Athens. Eventually people started associating owls to be a sign on Athena’s wisdom, since the building and city were dedicated to her. And ever since owls tend to be a symbol of wisdom.
Another symbol of Athena is the Aegis. The Aegis had Medusa’s head in the middle of it. Athena got the head from Perseus, a famous Greek hero, as a give after he slayed Medusa. Hermes’ then put it in the middle of Athena’s shield and it soon became a symbol of Athena.
Athena never married or had kids, even though she was very fond of Odysseus. But, there was one exception to her not having kids. The god of blacksmithing, Hephaestus, attempted to rape Athena. His ‘seed’ got on her leg and she wiped it off. It fell into the human world and a child, a future king of Athens, appeared on the ground.
Even though Poseidon is credited with making the horse, Athena made the chariot and made horsemanship, or the ability for human to have power over horses. So now both of the gods are credited for horses, and they are common sacrifices.
Below is a picture of the Goddess Athena. In the picture she is ready to fight with her often talked about spear.
This is a picture of a textile. Athena invented the textile and was very good at making unique designs.
Athena also invented the Greek flute. It was a fairly popular instrument.
Athena, being the goddess of war strategy, didn't like getting involved in human wars. She has only in a few myths, have helped one side in particular win.
Explanation of Colors and Music.
I used the colors I used because Athena is generally peaceful so yellow and orange seemed good to use. The music is to symbolize that Athena is wise, intense, unique, and constantly changing.
